इसलिए हम सभी को अच्छी तरह से कम्प्युटर का परिचय होना चाहिए. तभी हम इस इलेक्ट्रॉनिक उपकरण का उपयोग ठीक ढंग से करने में कामयाब हो सकते है. साथ ही प्रतियोगि परिक्षाओं में भी कम्प्युटर से संबंधित महत्वपूर्ण सवाल पूछे जाते है. इस कारण भी कम्प्युटर की बेसिक जानकारी होना जरुरी हो जाता है.

PC का नाम सुनते ही मन में सैंकडो‌ विचार आने लगते है. क्योंकि Computer सैंकडो‌ गतिविधिया अकेला कर सकता है. हाँ, सैंकडो! आपने सही पढा‌ और वो भी एक साथ. PC को शब्दो मे बांधना थोडा सा मुश्किल होता हैं. ऐसा इसलिए है कि हर इंसान Computer का उपयोग अलग‌-अलग कार्यों के लिए करता है.

कम्प्युटर के बारे में एक आम धारणा भी प्रचलित है कि Computer एक अंग्रेजी शब्द है. PC का हिंदी में मतलब (Computer Meaning in Hindi) "गणना" होता है. इसका मतलब कम्प्युटर एक गणकयंत्र (Calculator) है. लेकिन, कम्प्युटर को एक जोडने वाली मशीन कहना गलत होगा. क्योंकि कम्प्युटर जोडने के अलावा सैकडों अलग-अलग कार्य करता है.

अगर आप एक लेखक/टाईपिस्ट से पूछोगे कि कम्प्युटर क्या है? तो वह शायद कहे की कम्प्युटर एक टाईप मशीन हैं. इसी तरह हम एक गेम खेलने वाले बालक से पूछे तो वह शायद कहे कि कम्प्युटर तो एक गेम मशीन है. कम्प्युटर ऑपरेटर से पूछोगे तो वह इसे ऑफिस का काम निपटाने वाली मशीन के संदर्भ में परिभाषित करने की कोशिश करेगा.

इसलिए हम कह सकते है कि Computer को किसी एक अर्थ में नही बांधा जा सकता है. कम्प्युटर का मतलब उसके उपयोग के आधार पर हर व्यक्ति के लिए अलग है.

कम्प्युटर के इतने अर्थ होने के बावजूद हमने आपके लिए कम्प्युटर को परिभाषित करने कि एक कोशिश की है. इस कम्प्युटर की परीभाषा को आप कम्प्युटर की एक प्रमाणित परिभाषा नही मान सकते है. क्योंकि कार्य के आधार पर कम्प्युटर के अर्थ भी बदल जाते है.

"PC एक मशीन है जो कुछ तय निर्देशों के अनुसार कार्य को संपादित करते है. और ज्यादा कहे तो Computer एक इलेक्ट्रोनिक उपकरण है जो इनपुट उपकरणों की मदद से आँकडों को स्वीकार करता है उन्हें प्रोसेस करता है और उन आँकडों को आउटपुट उपकरणों की मदद से सूचना के रूप में प्रदान करता है."

इस परिभाषा के स्पष्ट है कि कम्प्युटर युजर द्वारा पहले कुछ निर्देश लेता है जो विभिन्न इनपुट डिवाईसों की मदद से प्रविष्ट कराए जाते है. फिर उन निर्देशों को प्रोसेस किया जाता है, और आखिर में निर्देशों के आधार पर परिणाम देता है जिसे आउटपुत डिवाईसों की मदद से प्रदर्शित करता है.

निर्देशों में कई प्रकार का डेटा शामिल होता है. जैसे; संख्या, वर्णमाला, आंकड़े आदि. इस डेटा के अनुसार ही कम्प्युटर परिणाम बनाता है. यदि कम्प्युटर को गलत आंकड़े दिए जाते है तो कम्प्युटर भी गलत ही परिणाम देता है. मतलब साफ है कि कम्प्युटर GIGO – Garbage in Garbage Out के नियम पर काम करता है.

कम्प्युटर का जनक "चार्ल्स बैबेज" को माना गया है. इन्होने सन 1833 में Analytical Engine का आविष्कार किया था, जो आधुनिक कम्प्युटर का आधार बना. इसी कारण उन्हे Father of Computer की उपाधी दी गई.
